Johnston Canyon - Banff, Alberta, Canada

Johnston Canyon is a scenic natural site in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. It is known for its breathtaking waterfalls, clear blue waters, and scenic hiking trails. Johnston Canyon is located on the Bow Valley Parkway, approximately 25 kilometers west of Banff, Alberta, Canada.

For a fast guide, please watch this mini-vlog that I prepared:

In the winter, Johnston Canyon becomes a winter wonderland, complete with frozen waterfalls and ice formations. Visitors can take ice walking excursions or even ice climb with the correct equipment and coaching. It's pretty cold there during winter, so make sure to wear jackets and jeans that are comfortable and suitable for hiking. I wore a parka, snow boots, and ski trousers. Ice cleats are also extremely helpful, especially in areas that are slippery.  Ice cleats can be purchased online or rented locally in Banff. You can check them in town or at snowtips-bactrax.com.

The canyon has a parking lot, picnic spaces, restrooms, and a visitor center with information about the area's natural and cultural history.

The canyon has two major hiking trails that take visitors to its spectacular waterfalls:

Lower Falls: This is a simple hike that takes about 1.1 kilometers one way to Johnston Canyon's lower falls. The trail is well-paved and appropriate for all ability levels.

Upper Falls: The Upper Falls trail is slightly more difficult than the Lower Falls walk and runs further into the canyon, measuring roughly 2.7 kilometers one-way. This trail provides access to the breathtaking upper falls. It has various staircases and catwalks, which provide thrilling views over the canyon.

Beyond the waterfalls, Johnston Canyon is known for its stunning natural splendor, which includes towering limestone cliffs, lush forests, and the vivid blue waters of Johnston Creek.

We only visited the lower falls because we were already exhausted. Our hike took roughly three hours because we took our time to fully appreciate the beauty of this place. Next season, we'll return to check out the upper falls. Johnston Canyon is a must-see site for nature lovers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts visiting Banff National Park, providing spectacular beauty and unforgettable experiences all year.
